<p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Today, on October 2, we join schools, hospitals, and organizations across the country in recognizing National Custodial Workers’ Recognition Day, a day dedicated to appreciating the incredible work of custodial staff.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">At Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, our caretakers do so much more than maintain and clean buildings. They are a daily part of school life, sharing smiles with students, lending a hand in unexpected situations, and reminding us all that care for our community often shows up in the little things.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">This year, we are proud to share a few stories that highlight just how much our caretakers contribute to the spirit of our schools:</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Gil Balmes, St. Paul School, Lethbridg</strong></b></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><img src="/images/7a406a04-41cc-42f7-adf8-35ffe8201608?fingerprint=ppb20260619165247" alt="kids" width="201" height="268" style="width:201px;height:268px;display:inline-block;float:right"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">During his morning rounds on September 17, Gil noticed two students, Chino and Betty, carefully repairing an OKI sign that had fallen from the school’s chain-link fence. Gil was struck by their respect for culture and tradition and by the pride they took in restoring it. It was a reminder that caretakers not only keep the school safe but also witness and encourage the beautiful ways students live out their values.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Kent Nagata, Our Lady of the Assumption School, Lethbridge</strong></b><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Kent recently received an apology note from a student after a toy ended up stuck on the </span><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">bathroom ceiling. The heartfelt letter, complete with “I’m really sorry” repeated more than once, shows how much students trust their caretakers and see them as important figures in their school community.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Trevor Clinton, St. Michael’s School, Pincher Creek</strong></b><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">A couple of years ago, when a bird got trapped in the art room, the previous head caretaker </span><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Ryan Bunnage didn’t hesitate to step in. Armed with a towel, he carefully captured and released the bird, much to the relief of staff and students. His quick action saved the little creature and proved that caretakers truly look after all members of the school community, feathered or not!</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Vilma Chan, Children of St. Martha School, Lethbridge</strong></b><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">For 24 years, Vilma has been part of the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division family, and for 18 of those years she has called Children of St. Martha home. With over 200 students, she considers it a blessing to know each one by name. Vilma shares that the kindness of students and staff makes her work joyful, and she treasures the words of encouragement she receives daily. Her story reminds us that caretakers help create a welcoming, inclusive environment</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Kevin Gillespie, St. Patrick’s School, Taber</strong></b><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Each year, Kevin dresses up as Santa for the students. One year, a Pre-K student with autism, who had always avoided Santa, surprised everyone by walking right up for a photo. His mother said she had never been able to get a picture of him with Santa before. Kevin recalls, “It was priceless and I will never forget it.”</span><br><br><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Ardee Aguilar, St. Francis Junior High, Lethbridge</strong></b><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Ardee recalls his second day on the job when a burst pipe challenged him right away. With the support of students and staff, he managed the situation and built strong relationships. Caretakers like Ardee are important because they ensure the school continues running smoothly, even during unexpected challenges, and they model resilience and responsibility.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Chris Snow, St. Catherine’s School, Picture Butte</strong></b><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">A few years ago Chris and a grade one student showed up dressed exactly alike, it created laughter and joy. Caretakers are key to school culture. They bring warmth, humor, and positivity that make students feel connected and welcome.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Tirzo Lazaro Vergel, École St. Mary, Lethbridge</strong></b><br><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">New to the team, Tirzo has already felt warmly welcomed by staff and students. His story reminds us that caretakers are central to school communities, helping everyone feel included and part of the family from day one.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">These stories remind us that our caretakers are more than the backbone of our buildings; they are part of the heart of our schools. <p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Aaron Skretting as Associate Superintendent of Learning.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Mr. Skretting brings a strong academic and professional background to this role. He completed a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education at the University of Lethbridge in 2001 and a Master of Education at Gonzaga University in 2012. Since beginning his teaching career in 2001, he has served in several capacities including classroom teacher, associate principal, and Director of Religious Education. His experience spans both Palliser School Division and Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, including time at Catholic Central High School.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">In his new position, Mr. Skretting is eager to continue strengthening the Catholic identity of schools while supporting staff in providing exceptional learning experiences. “I am most looking forward to working with our dedicated staff, families, and parish partners to deepen the Catholic identity of our schools. Together, we can support teachers and principals in providing the best learning experiences for students. By fostering a shared sense of purpose, we can help every child achieve academic success and experience the joy of belonging to a faith community where they are reminded daily that they are loved and valued.”</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Mr. Skretting is especially passionate about faith, First Nations, Métis and Inuit education, and pedagogy. Guided by scripture, he reflects on 1 Kings 19:11-13, where God speaks not in the storm or fire, but in the gentle silence. <p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Today, the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division gathered at Catholic Central High School East in Lethbridge to celebrate the annual Division Opening Mass. The celebration marked the beginning of a new school year rooted in confidence, faith, and a shared mission to educate. His Excellency, Bishop McGrattan, presided over the Mass, offering words of inspiration and challenge for all gathered.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Drawing on the example of St. John the Baptist, Bishop McGrattan reminded staff and clergy of their sacred role as Catholic educators and leaders. Like John, who always pointed beyond himself toward Christ, we too are called to guide students to the Lamb of God with courage, humility, and steadfastness.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“We have the privilege of pointing out the Lamb of God. We have the privilege of introducing students to Jesus Christ,” Bishop McGrattan said. He invited staff to see themselves in the role of evangelization, courageously presenting the gospel in a world that often presents what is not true. His words called for a deep sense of humility and conviction: to serve first, to witness to the truth, and to stand firm in faith, even when facing challenges.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Following the Mass, Superintendent Chantel Axani addressed staff with gratitude and encouragement for the year ahead. She acknowledged the exciting growth of the Division, highlighted by the construction of St. Kateri elementary school, as well as the daily dedication of all staff across 16 schools. With honesty, she recognized the uncertainty and challenges of the times, while calling everyone back to the heart of their mission: the students.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“Our students are the heart of everything that we do, and they are counting on us,” Chantel reminded staff. She called the Division to embrace the new three-year faith plan, </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Open Wide the Doors! <p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is pleased to announce that Mr. Cason Machacek has been appointed as Associate Principal of Father Leonard Van Tighem School beginning in the 2025-2026 school year.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: start;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Mr. Machacek began teaching in 2017 after completing his Bachelor of Management/Bachelor of Education at the University of Lethbridge. He is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Leadership. His experience includes teaching middle school Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, and Physical Education, as well as supporting English as a second language. Dr. Boschee holds a PhD in Educational Research from the University of Calgary, where her work focused on Indigenous ways of knowing and place pedagogies. She also holds a Master of Education, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Lethbridge.&nbsp; Over her 25-year career in education, she has served in multiple schools across the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, including at St. Mary (Taber), St. Basil, St. Paul, and St. Teresa of Calcutta. Most recently, she served as Associate Principal at Children of St. Martha School in Lethbridge. In addition to her work in K–12 settings, Dr. Boschee has also taught at the University of Lethbridge and the University of Calgary.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“I step into this new role with a profound sense of responsibility,” says Dr. Boschee. “This work is not mine alone—it is guided by relationships, by learning, and by a call to walk with humility and hope alongside the stories of all the relations of this place—past and present. Over 80 students from Grades 4–9 at FLVT had the incredible opportunity to take part in a vibrant and meaningful public art initiative through the Lethbridge Youth Pilot Art Project.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Led by FLVT teachers Emily Boutland (Grade 4) and Kyra Peake (Grade 8)—alongside renowned Alberta muralists Lacey Jane Wilburn and Layla Folkmann of LALA Art, and Leanne Kembel, Student Engagement Coordinator—the project aimed to both beautify a local pedestrian tunnel and give students a unique, hands-on experience in the creative process of public art.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The experience began with engaging, school-based art workshops where students were invited to reflect on and visually express what they love about their school, their community, and life in Lethbridge. Their drawings celebrated everything from family and friendship to nature, local landmarks, and favourite places—all under the theme of visual storytelling.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><img src="/images/a826f3f1-7ac4-4d0f-a683-6fdb03668ea5?fingerprint=ppb20251217012121" alt="FLVT Art1" width="300" height="383" style="width:300px;height:383px;float:right"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“It was such an amazing opportunity to have students from both elementary and junior high be part of this,” she said. “It was so neat to watch the process unfold—from the time they created their small drawings to seeing them on such a large scale in the tunnel. It was a unique chance for our youth to have an artistic voice and be part of beautifying something in our community.”</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Working with the artists, students’ sketches were carefully woven into a larger composition that became “Tunnel Vision,” the largest mural project ever completed in Lethbridge, spanning 2,500 square feet.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">FLVT students were then invited to the mural site to help bring their drawings to life—painting side-by-side with professional artists and learning large-scale painting techniques in the process.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><img src="/images/a66708ce-1821-42c6-a511-ec85626fed9a?fingerprint=ppb20251217012109" alt="Art Tunnel3" width="464" height="309" style="width:464px;height:309px;float:left"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“It was really fun. It was like experiencing history.”</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Muralist Lacey Jane explained that preserving the creativity and originality of each student’s vision was at the heart of the project.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“When you give a child a crayon and a piece of paper, what they come up with is truly genius, wildly unique, and wonderful in every way. It was important for us to keep the actual drawings they had done but blow them up on such a huge scale. <h3 class="editor-heading-h3" dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Board of Trustees Ratifies CUPE Collective Agreement</strong></b></h3><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">On May 14, 2025 the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division Board of Trustees ratified the collective agreement with Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1825 following ratification by CUPE members earlier this month.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“We are very pleased that a four-year deal was negotiated,” said Dr. Carmen Mombourquette, Board Chair for the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division. “Four years means that focus can be squarely placed on the primacy of student learning. Part of the work that comes from the negotiated settlement leads to a renewed focus on the means and ways through which cooperative work can occur around solving issues that might negatively impact student learning. With three public performances scheduled—7:30 p.m. on May 6, and 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on May 7—audiences can expect a colorful and joy-filled musical experience, brimming with heart, humor, and chocolate-covered magic.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The production was chosen by student vote at the end of last year and has been in the works since the fall. They held auditions in September and rehearsals began in November. According to music director and FLVT teacher Dana Visser, the beloved story offered the perfect mix of whimsy and creativity.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">"We chose Willy Wonka because there are so many unique characters, fun songs, and awesome opportunities for dances," said Visser. It feels like a dream—which is ironic because my character is going to be the one making dreams come true," said Kim. He was pretty excited when I told him I’ll be playing Charlie and I can’t wait for him to see the show," said Carroll. "It’s been an amazing experience. I’ve made a lot of close friends in Grade 7 and 8. Mrs. Lindemann has been with Holy Spirit for 15 years, previously serving as Director of Finance. In response to the announcement, Mrs. Lindemann said, “I am honored and excited to take on this role. I am blessed to work with amazing colleagues and look forward to taking on new challenges.
